3CX, a leading provider of VoIP phone systems, confirmed that its desktop app was in fact compromised by a cyberattack. However, TAZ Endpoint Protection detected the attack and stopped it in its tracks.
3CX did release an update that in turn addressed the vulnerability. 3CX’s customer list includes high-profile companies and organizations like American Express, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, BMW, Honda, Air France, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, IKEA, and the UK’s National Health Service.
How the Attack Happened
Attackers carried this out by releasing a malicious update to the 3CX phone app on March 29, 2023. When unsuspecting users installed the update, it allowed the malicious code to execute and communicate with a command and control server to steal data.
